Germany, Ireland and Iceland are just some of the answers she could have come up with.
But her mind 'went blank' and she said Paris - and the look of disgust Mariam gave her has become an online sensation, especially since Sarah revealed she did A level geography.

Sarah says: 'I did Geograpghy at A level but that's about as far as it goes.
'Oh...erm..Paris.
'I don't know I can't think of anything - I'm having a blank
Mariam appears horrified at her friend's answer and combines a death stare, eye-roll and a small huff.
Presenter Alexander Armstrong chuckles and replies: 'Don't worry, really don't worry.
'A - I wouldn't be at all surprised if there aren't several 100 scorers in this round.
'And B - it's always tough going on that first podium, so sorry for putting you under that pressure.'
'Wrong for a number of reasons,' Richard Osman helpfully pointed out, as Paris is neither a country, nor does it end with two consonants.

A number of people took to Twitter to make fun of Sarah and Mariam embarrassing moment.
Holly Rogers shared the clip and said: 'When your teammate did A level geography and thinks Paris is a country #pointless'

COUNTRIES SARAH COULD HAVE SAID

Germany, Italy, Hungary, Ireland, New Zealand, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Egypt, Poland, Thailand, Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Swaziland, Bangladesh, Solomon Islands, Marshall Islands
Adam Blazza wrote: 'Saw this on #bbc (sic) #pointless earlier.... She did A-Level Geography and said Paris is a country.... The Schools are failing! #education #fail.'
Lee Clifford said: 'Name a country ending in 2 consonants...an A Level student answer was Paris!
'The future of Britain right there #pointless'
Georgia Williams added: 'Ahaha Paris!!! Jesus christ. Your mate is raging!! #pointless #awkwardjourneyhome'
Even the official Pointless Twitter page poked fun at the show's contestants.
It posted: 'No! We haven't has a jackpot all year. #Pointless is back to the regular time of 5.15pm on @BBCOne from tomorrow. We'll always have Paris...'
Nicola Payne gave Sarah some form of consolation. She tweeted: 'Paris isn't the best ever worst answer on #pointless. That honour still belongs the girl who said that Lenny Hendrix was a famous drummer.'
The pair went out in the first round, after Mariam - who was needing a score of 31 or less to stay in it - could only get a 34 with Iceland.

LAST NIGHT'S SHOW QUESTIONS

  • Countries ending in two consonants
  • Songs with 'black' in the title
  • Famous people with the initials 'MR'
  • Geography-titled films
She had said her other options were Greenland, which is not a country as it's part of Denmark, and New Zealand which would have scored them 30 points and sent them into the next round.
Another funny answer, from another contestant, was Lapland which is in Finland.
It was noted by co-presenter Osman that Ivory Coast was not an acceptable answer as it is now officially called Côte d’Ivoire.
Other tasks in last night's show were for contestants to name songs with 'black' in the title, famous people with the initials 'MR', Michelin starred chefs and geography-titled films.
