KLANG: Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has taken to task groups in the guise of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that are out to sow discontent.

In his royal address in conjunction with his 71st birthday’s investiture ceremony, Sultan Sharafuddin said these groups hid behind NGOs which tried to create communal strife by generating chaos that could threaten the nation’s stability.

“The actions of these unfavourable groups must be stopped in order to gain the people’s, tourists’ and foreign investors’ confidence,” said Sultan Sharafuddin yesterday.

The Ruler also said the development and prosperity enjoyed by Selangor would continue if leaders at all levels – be it political, community or religious – as well as the state’s civil servants were able to work together in honesty.

Sultan Sharafuddin said negative elements must be prevented from becoming cancerous among leaders and administrators or the prosperity achieved would be destroyed due to the lack of trustworthiness.

“Therefore, my advice to the state leaders and civil servants is for them to learn from history about governments that collapsed because of leaderships weak in character and weak in faith and practice as well as failure to curb graft from spreading,” said Sultan Sharafuddin.

The Ruler also said he was worried disaster might strike Selangor if the good values in society continued to decline, especially among leaders who misused their power and position and were involved in misappropriation and graft.

“Graft will also create a negative implication towards the country’s leadership with their integrity, honesty and transparency being questioned. As a result, leaders will be perceived as not credible by the people,’’ he added.

Various titles and awards were given to 101 people. Sultan Sharafuddin’s consort Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin and the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah, who both received the Darjah Kerabat Selangor Yang Amat Dihormati (DK), headed the list of recipients this year.

Archbishop of South-East Asia’s Anglican Church and Bishop of Kuching Reverend Bolly Lapok received the Dato’ Paduka Mahkota Selangor (DPMS) which comes with the title Datuk.

This year’s investiture ceremony was extra special as it was the first time, after becoming the state’s Ruler, that Sultan Sharafuddin has a consort by his side.

It was also the first investiture after the Raja Muda’s official proclamation as Selangor’s crown prince.
