‘No more cuts during festive seasons’

PETALING JAYA: There will be no more scheduled water cuts surrounding major holiday celebrations again, said National Water Services Commission (SPAN) chairman Datuk Liang Teck Meng.

“I have issued an order that no water companies will be allowed to carry out anymore planned maintenance works that will cause large scale water disruptions a week before or after a major holiday celebration,” said Liang in a statement yesterday.

“SPAN and other water companies must respect the consumers’ needs when they celebrate the holidays,” he added.

He said SPAN would work with Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and the water companies to ensure maintenance works planned for yesterday would be completed within the set period of 16 hours.

Liang added that Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) had been asked to ensure water supply would resume as soon as possible and water tankers be despatched for emergency use and for any public gatherings.

“Water is an essential service, and everyone must carry out their duties responsibly to ensure there is minimal disruption of supply to consumers,” he added.

To reduce the impact of the disruption of electricity supply to operations of water treatment plants, Liang suggested all water companies prepare an alternative electricity supply using a generator set or a second power supply source.

He also advised water companies to liaise with TNB in their respective states to loan generator sets from external sources when carrying out scheduled maintenance works that require electricity from TNB.

In a separate statement, Air Selangor said it had instructed the management to speed up the water recovery process for consumers as soon as the TNB maintenance work at the Bukit Badong substation was completed.

Air Selangor corporate communications head Amin Lin Abdullah said TNB work, which began at 8am yesterday, was progressing according to schedule and was to be completed at midnight today.

He said the SSP 1, 2 and 3 water treatment plants were operating at 50% to 60% of the full capacity throughout the maintenance period.

Water will be distributed to the affected areas according to a schedule of the zones to ensure supply is distributed efficiently when the plants resume operations today.

“The implementation of the scheduled water supply will help speed up the recovery in these areas. With the scheduled recovery in place, water distribution to affected areas using water tankers can be better managed,” he added.
