KUALA LUMPUR: Five men walked into a sundry shop, identified themselves as Customs officers and then walked out with nine cartons of cigarettes and RM1,300 in cash.
Nobody in the shop in Taman Wahyu even thought of asking these “officers” for their identification cards during the 10.30pm incident on Dec 14. It was only after the group of men left that an employee of the shop started to have doubts about their identities and lodged a police report.
A day later, police arrested most of the group.
Sentul OCPD Asst Comm R. Munusamy, when met after a monthly assembly at the police district headquarters yesterday, said the five suspects, aged between 24 and 47 years, identified themselves as Customs officers to an employee of the shop.
“No identification cards were shown. They just identified themselves as such,” ACP Munusamy said, adding that the group then proceeded to rummage through the shop.
They walked off with nine cartons of cigarettes and about RM1,300 in cash. The worker made a police report soon after because he was suspicious of their identities.
Following investigations, police made four arrests on Dec 15 in the Port Klang, Sungai Way and Jinjang areas.
ACP Munusamy revealed that three of the suspects were civil servants, and that their respective offices would initiate disciplinary action against them.
Police are on the lookout for the remaining suspect, who is believed to be in the Selayang area.
