MIRI: A corporate figure, named as the alleged mastermind behind the murder of a Sarawak politician, has been arrested after spending almost six months on the run.
The businessman, who is a Datuk, was arrested by China's Public Security Ministry at Putian in the Fujian province in Dec 12.
He is wanted for his alleged involvement in the murder of Miri PKR branch secretary and activist Bill Kayong.
Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor said that upon arrest, the businessman was ordered by Chinese authorities to leave Xiamen for Malaysia.
"A team led by Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Dev Kumar escorted the businessman back to Malaysia," he said in a statement today.
The businessman was arrested by Malaysian authorities when he arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 7.45pm today.
Mazlan said the businessman would be produced at the court here tomorrow where he would be charged with the murder of Kayong.
Kayong, who was also the political secretary to Miri member of parliament Dr Michael Teoh, was gunned down at a traffic light intersection near the E-mart supermarket along Jalan Miri-Bintulu at 8.20am on June 21.
He left for Singapore from Miri on June 23, two days after the victim was gunned down.
He then flew to Melbourne from Singapore on July 3, and is believed to have been on the run since then.
