KUALA LUMPUR: A policewoman was sentenced to seven years' jail for intentionally withholding information that a terrorist was leaving for Syria to join the Islamic State terror group.

High Court judicial commissioner Nordin Hassan handed down the maximum sentence under Section 130M of the Penal Code against Korp Jusninawati Abdul Gani, 35, after the defence failed to prove doubt in the case.

JC Nordin said the offence was serious and that the court should hand down a deterrent sentence.

"The accused has failed to carry out her duty as a policewoman in giving information that Abu Kedah was leaving for Syria to join the Islamic State group," he said in his judgement Tuesday.

JC Nordin instructed Jusninawati to serve her sentence from March 22, the day she was arrested.

Jusninawati was charged with committing the offence between Aug 2015 and March 22, 2016.

A total of four prosecution witnesses were called to give their testimony.

Azlina Rasdi was the deputy public prosecutor while counsel Nik Zarith Nik Moustpha acted for Jusninawati.
