SUNGAI PETANI: Five members of the notorious house-breaking "Gang Suria" were nabbed after police opened fire on the suspects in a failed getaway here.

Kedah police chief Comm Datuk Asri Yusoff said Monday police received a call from the public about several suspicious individuals in a car parked next to the Taman Ria Jaya Maybank branch here at about 9am on Sunday.

A mobile patrol unit rushed to the scene and saw two men running from the back of a shop, entering the car and speeding away.

Comm Asri said a 20-minute chase ensued until the car went out of control when it rammed into a lamppost at Batu 2, Jalan Kuala Ketil, here.
Police opened fire when the suspects got out of the car and tried to attack the officers.

Two of the suspects were injured in the shooting and are in stable condition at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital here, he said.

"All the suspects are in their 20s to late 30s and are from Sungai Petani.

"One of them has a record for 17 house break-ins, robbery, car theft and drug abuse.

"The car was reported stolen in Kepala Batas, Penang," Comm Asri said, adding that five mobile phones and an assortment of house-breaking tools was recovered.

The suspects have been remanded for four days for further investigations, he said.

In another case, Comm Asri said a drug mule was arrested and 3.2kg of heroin was seized from his lorry when police raided a house in Kampung Baru Thye Seng, Kuala Ketil, near here, early Monday.

The heroin, worth about RM75,000, was found in plastic packets wrapped in newspaper inside two black plastic bags.

The 30-year-old suspect has been remanded until Dec 4 and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.
