GEORGE TOWN: A three-year-old toddler is in critical condition after falling from an escalator at a shopping complex here.

The girl from Bayan Lepas cracked her skull and sustained brain haemorrhage after falling from the first floor at about 6.30pm on Sunday.

A closed-circuit television (CCTV) recording showed that the family of four – the toddler with her father, mother and elder brother – were shopping just before the incident.

The toddler was astride her father’s shoulders when they took the escalator to an upper floor and the elder brother stood in front of them.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said preliminary investigations showed that the elder brother fell on the escalator, prompting the father to help him up to avoid danger.

“In order to do so, the father bent forward and accidentally let go of his daughter, resulting in her falling down,” he said when contacted yesterday. “The mother was unable to react in time as the incident happened quickly.”

ACP Mior said the toddler was sent to the Penang Hospital immediately. She is currently receiving treatment at the intensive care unit.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect and exposure of a child to physical injury.

When contacted yesterday, the complex spokesman said a statement on the incident will be issued soon.
