ALOR STAR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is giving 46 owners of scrapped luxury cars from Singapore a week to come forward and surrender their vehicles to authorities.

Failure to abide by the notice issued by the MACC can result in action taken against the owners under Section 69 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, said KL MACC director Datuk Seri Ahmad Khusairi Yahaya.

"So far, 17 cars have been seized, and we are now in the process of tracking down another 46 owners.

"We have a list. We know who the owners are, and where they live.

"We urge all of them to surrender their vehicles in a week, or face stern action by the MACC," he told a press conference here today.

The press conference was held in relation to the case of expired Singaporean luxury cars being given a new lease of life by a cloned car syndicate that has links to the Road Transport Department, reported on the front page of the New Straits Times yesterday.

Today, four suspects allegedly linked to the syndicate were remanded for a week to assist investigations into the case.

The four comprise an RTD administrative assistant, one runner, one used car dealer and an online car dealer.

Ahmad Khusairi said the four were arrested in Kuala Lumpur, Kedah and Kuantan, after intelligence gathering which lasted four months.

It is learnt that its connection to insiders, including those with access to the RTD system, has given it unbridled power to give ownership of these recycled, once high-end cars to new owners in this country.

Its modus operandi, it was reported, involved "buying over" the right people.

Among the luxury vehicles that the syndicate preferred are BMW, Honda, Toyota, Mini Cooper and the Mitsubishi Grandis.

Syndicates have also been brazenly expanding their car-cloning business online.
