Rock group Akim & The Majistret emerged as the most influential celebrity on social media, bagging the coveted Excellent Personality award at the inaugural Anugerah Pilihan Online (APO) 2016 prize presentation ceremony last night.

The rockers won a Rafflesia pearl necklace worth RM20,000, D’nars products, Ice Watch, and Dorsett Putrajaya hotel stay vouchers.

Umrah Travel Services Sdn Bhd also offered them a 14-day umrah package.

The band’s lead vocalist Akim Ahmad was unable to attend the ceremony, which was aired live on TV2 last night, as he had a prior video shooting engagement in Amsterdam.

The event was also streamed live on YouTube and the apo.mstar.com.my website.

D’nars founder Faziani Rohban, Star Media Radio Group chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Aminuddin Mohd Rous, Star Media Group chief operations officer Calvin Kan and mStar executive editor Rozaid A Rahman presented the prizes to the winners in the 18 categories.

Star Media Group Bhd entities mStar Online and Suria FM organised the inaugural event in recognition of celebrities in various fields who are popular on social media.

The winners were selected through online voting. The competition attracted 775,161 votes when online polling ended on Wednesday.

Audit firm BDO Governance Sdn Bhd affirmed the vote tally.

Actor Saharul Ridzwan and actress Mia Ahmad also sprang surprises when both the Hati Perempuan drama series stars emerged winners under two categories each.

Saharul was named the Best Online Choice Actor and D’nars Choice Handsome Male while Mia was named the Best Online Choice Actress and D’nars Choice Elegant Female.

Datuk Siti Nurhaliza also proved her popularity on social media, as she was voted the Best Female Singer and Online Choice Fashion Icon by netizens.

Siti Nurhaliza was unable to attend the ceremony as she had been advised to refrain from participating in any activities for the time being. Her sister Siti Norsaida was present to accept the awards on her behalf.

Other online choice winners included Hazama (Best Male Singer), Datuk Fazley Yaakob (Celebrity Chef), Jihan Muse (Celebrity Comedian) and Fara Fauzana (Radio Presenter).

Datuk Lee Chong Wei was named the Online Choice Celebrity Sportsman and Datuk Nicol David was named the Online Choice Celebrity Sportswoman.

The JDT football team emerged the Best Sports Team.

Actress Neelofa, who runs the Naelofar Hijab business, was crowned the Young Business Icon.

Other online choice winners were Siakap Keli (Blog) and Mat Luthfi (Social Media Celebrity).

Each winner received a trophy, a Rafflesia pearl necklace worth RM5,000, Ice Watch, and Dorsett Putrajaya hotel stay voucher.

Artistes Ella, Adibah Noor, Azlan, Hazama, One Nation Emcee, Wani, Tasha Mansahar, Najwa Latiff, Ronnie, Amar Baharin, Adi Putra, Syamel, Sandra, Aman Ra, Iwere and Altimet entertained the audience with impressive performances.

Singer Dayang Nurfaizah paid tribute to composer Datuk Adnan Abu Hassan, who died recently.
