KUALA LUMPUR: Ninety-one vehicle owners have been issued with notices to appear before the Road Transport Department (JPJ) for questioning after they were found to have used the emergency lane and obstructed an ambulance.
JPJ deputy director-general (planning and operations) Datuk Yusoff Ayob said the notices were issued after completing an investigation on a video recording at the 228km mark of the North-South Highway near Malacca last Sunday.
“All owners involved are given 14 days to come to the JPJ office under Section 114 of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said after presenting certificates to participants of a road safety basic course here yesterday.
“If they are not involved, they are required to make a police report for investigation purposes,” he said, adding that there was a possibility some parties had forged the registration number.
He said those involved could be slapped with a RM300 compound or charged in court and fined RM2,000 upon conviction.
A total of 48 participants, comprising Skuad Muda volunteers with interest in motoring-related activities took part in the two-day course at the Federal Territories JPJ.
Also present were Federal Territories JPJ director Datuk Md Ziki A. Rahman, Kuala Lumpur JPJ enforcement division chief Datuk Norhadzli Mohd Azhar and Peninsular Malaysia Road Transport Officers Union president Hamzah Masri.
Yusoff said a total of 480,000 road accidents were reported nationwide last year, mostly due to the attitude of drivers such as speeding and reckless driving. — Bernama
