16 filthy food premises in KL ordered to close

KUALA LUMPUR: A filthy mamak restaurant in Jalan Genting Klang, found to have rat faeces and cockroaches in the kitchen, was among 16 food outlets in the city ordered closed by the local authorities today.
The two-week closure order was issued by the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya Federal Territories Health Department after its enforcement team conducted a spot check on the premises.
Its director, Datuk Dr Narimah Nor Yahaya, said besides the closure order, compound fines were also issued to the restaurant.
“The owner of the restaurant has clearly failed to meet the standard cleanliness requirements. Their negligence can cause detrimental health effects on the customers.
“Our team also found a barrel of smuggled cigarettes hidden in the kitchen, believed to be sold under-the-counter to the customers,” she told reporters at the end of the operation.
Dr Narimah said 77 enforcement officers from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) health enforcement division, as well as the police, were involved in the sport check on over 70 premises.
She said the checks on the premises were conducted under the Food Act 1983 and the Food Hygiene Regulation 2009.
She also advised the public to lodge complaints to the state Health Departments if they found food premises which did not comply with the standard food hygiene regulations.
