KUALA LUMPUR - Beijing on Friday narrowly won an IOC vote for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games that secured its place in sporting history.

The Chinese capital beat Almaty of Kazakhstan by just 44 votes to 40, with one abstention, to become the first city to be awarded the summer and winter Games.

Beijing held the summer Olympics in 2008 in what was then seen as China sealing its place as an emerging superpower.

This time it had presented itself as a safe pair of hands against the former Kazakh capital which ate into China's support on the International Olympic Committee with an impressive late "Keeping It Real" campaign that played on China's reliance on artificial snow and the vast distances between its venues.

But China's basketball legend Yao Ming and Sports Minister Liu Peng still leaped to their feet in joy when IOC president Thomas Bach announced the result at special session in Kuala Lumpur.

The 2022 Games will be held in March 2022 during the Lunar New Year and with many outdoor events held against a backdrop of the Great Wall of China.

Asia will also host the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Six cities had entered the race for 2022 but Beijing and Almaty were left as the only candidates when Oslo, Stockholm, Krakow in Poland and Lviv in Ukraine withdrew for financial and political reasons. - AFP

Drama at Dang Wangi Police Headquarters as Suaram's Sukri Razad and Activist Adam Adli Arrested in front of Media

Syukri Razab Being Arrested at Dang Wangi

Activists Syukri Razab, Adam Adli detained outside Dang Wangi police station

KUALA LUMPUR: "Drama" went down in front of the Dang Wangi police headquarters as policemen arrested two activists.
Suaram coordinator Syukri Razab was detained by two officers at the entrance of the station and hauled into a van in front of the media and other human rights activists including Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, Adam Adli  and Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) members Eric Paulsen and Latheefa Koya.
Syukri and Adam were here to meet the Dang Wangi police over their plans to stage a protest outside Sogo shopping centre to call for the Prime Minister’s resignation.
Ambiga and LFL were also present on a separate matter after police summoned her to be questioned for allegedly making threatening remarks on street protests.
Syukri was stunned as officers held his arms and carried him back into the station.
The activists and media rushed to the gate to see what was happening, but the sliding gate was closed to the cameras at about 4pm, Friday.
Lawyer Latheefa Koya said officers handling Syukri said they have been ordered to detain him over a sedition offence.
"This had nothing to do with the meeting they had of the rally. We have been told that he would be brought to the Brickfields police headquarters,” she added.
Minutes later, The Star saw police officers running towards Adam's car as he was about to get in and arrested the student activist.
Kuala Lumpur CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad declined to comment on the arrests, saying that police would only furnish the public with information on Saturday.
Separately, Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah said that one of its steering committee members Mandeep Singh has been summoned for questioning at the Petaling Jaya police headquarters.

        BY CHEW HUI MIN

HANGZHOU: A woman was killed while taking a lift in China on Thursday morning, the latest in a string of accidents involving building machinery.
The 21-year-old entered from the 16th storey of an apartment block in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province in eastern China, local reports said.
She was partly in the lift when it suddenly went up, and her head was caught in the elevator.
A resident told the media that there were frequent problems with the lifts in the building, which was built in the 1990s.
There was another accident in Jiangsu on Monday, which resulted in the death of a woman, Xinhua reported.
The woman was stuck in a gap between a cargo lift and the lift platform in Wuxi City. "Her body was severely distorted when rescuers arrived at the scene", Xinhua said.
The two lift accidents came in the same week an escalator fault caused a woman to be crushed in the escalator machinery in Hubei.
Xiang Liujuan, 30, died after falling through a loose escalator landing panel in a shopping centre in Hubei.
The video of Xiang being "swallowed" by the escalator after pushing her son to safety went viral, and has brought China's safety standards into the spotlight.
In another incident on Monday, a one-year-old's left arm was caught in the stairs of an escalator in a shopping mall in China's Guangxi region.
The child's arm, which rescuers pulled out half an hour later, was mangled.
A 2014 survey on 2,523 elevators aged 15 years or older showed 7 per cent of them had major safety risks, state media Xinhua news agency said.
The Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) of China has also revealed that almost five in 100 lifts and escalators have been found with problems.
Last year, there were 48 elevator and escalator-related accidents in China with a total of 36 deaths reported to quality inspection authorities, according to the administration, Xinhua said. - The Straits Times/Asia News Network

        SEPTEMBER 2014 - A Similar Incident Happen

A CCTV video that shows a malfunctioning lift shooting up and slowly crushing a student to death as he steps inside has gone viral in China.

The young man, who could not move away quickly enough as the lift jerked upwards, is caught between the floor of the lift and the top of the door, where he is crushed to death.

The video footage is from a surveillance camera fixed inside the malfunctioning lift at Huaqiao University, in the city of Xiamen in south-east China's Fujian Province.

The three-minute video clip of the incident, which was one of the most widely shared items on social media throughout China yesterday, shows the last minutes of the student's life as his body jerks from a lack of oxygen.

The as yet unnamed man was said to be an architecture student from the university who was standing at the front of a small group of people when the doors opened.

Another student also at the scene said that the pair were waiting for the lift on the third floor. The doors opened and the lift started to move as the victim stepped inside.

He told local media that the young man seemed more surprised than worried as the lift started to rise upwards.

He had not had time to react when it suddenly slammed him into the top of the lift's doorframe, trapping his upper torso and left leg in the left, while the rest of his body dangled outside.

Rescue workers rushed to free the young man's body, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, having suffocating because his lungs were crushed and he was unable to breathe.

Huaqiao University President Jia Yimin promised a full investigation into the incident which has shocked the country where there have been a number of incidents involving lifts.

Education officials responded by vowing to conduct safety inspections on all university lifts. In one month alone recently there were six serious injuries involving lift malfunctions of which five ended fatally.

Singapore has 3 banks in the Top 10 List of The World's Strongest Banks

SINGAPORE - OCBC Bank was ranked third-strongest bank in the world, behind Hong Kong's Hang Seng and Japan's Norinchukin Bank in the ranking by Bloomberg Markets magazine released on Thursday (Jul 30).
Two other local banks also make the top 10 list, with DBS Group at 9th and United Overseas Bank (UOB) at 10th, according to the press release by Bloomberg.
To identify the world's strongest banks, Bloomberg evaluated public and private banks with total assets of US$100 billion or more as of Jun 1 and they were examined in five categories, such as the ratio of the bank's Tier 1 capital to its risk-weighted assets and efficiency ratio.
Hang Seng is benefiting from the rising wealth in Hong Kong and mainland China, Bloomberg said, and this has helped it top the list for the second year in a row.
In total, 114 banks worldwide were ranked; 13 of them are private.

The Prime Minister has summoned all state Umno chiefs to his official residence today at 5.30pm

State Umno chiefs to meet at PM's residence

PETALING JAYA: The Prime Minister has summoned all state Umno chiefs to his official residence today.
The chiefs, who include seven Mentris Besar and two Chief Ministers, will convene at Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s Putrajaya residence at 5.30pm for what is expected to be a political briefing.
It is understood that Najib would want to touch on several current issues such as the Cabinet reshuffle and the appointment of a new Attorney-General.
Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar and Umno chairman Datuk Seri Mohamed Hasan said the meeting was timely.
In doing so, there would be a common story board among Umno leaders at the state level, he said.
Another state Umno chief said he was looking forward to the meeting.
“Whatever I know about the Cabinet reshuffle, I know it from the media,” he said.
“We want to hear it from the horse’s mouth. We’ll be all ears,” said the state chief.
“We will also have questions for the PM.”
He added that such meetings were necessary “when something big happens”, especially now given that the reshuffle involved the axing of two top Umno leaders.
Deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal are no longer in the Cabinet.
The reshuffle saw the appointment of Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as the new Deputy Prime Minister.
“It is a major reshuffle that will have impact on the ground,” the state chief said. “I believe the PM would want to give us his side of the story so that we can take it down to our members.”
However, the top-gun meeting also triggered speculation among Umno politicians that the party president might replace a few of them as state Umno chiefs although he had no urgent reason to do so.
The argument is that Najib wanted people he could trust to be in charge of the state party machinery.
The meeting was scheduled after the cancellation of the Umno supreme council meeting. It was called off to enable a cooling-down period.
A meeting between Najib and the G6 or key office-bearers of all the Umno divisions was also called off.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) cannot hold proceedings until a new chairman has been appointed, Rules Dewan Rakyat Speaker

No PAC proceedings without chairman, says Pandikar

PETALING JAYA: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) cannot hold proceedings until a new chairman has been appointed, said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia.
He pointed out that Standing Order 77(3) was only applicable when the chairman or vice-chairman could not attend the proceedings for certain reasons, and not when there was a vacancy for the post.
Standing Order 77(3) reads: “In the absence of the Chairman or Vice-Chairman due to illness or for any other reason whatsoever, the Committee shall elect any one member to act as a Chairman to preside over the Committee’s meeting.”
To avoid any dispute or issue over the validity of the PAC proceedings when the chairman’s post became vacant, Pandikar said it was only right for the proceedings to be held after the chairman’s post was filled.
“Also, the three committee members who have been appointed minister and deputy ministers would need to resign and be replaced with new members,” Pandikar said yesterday.
But PAC deputy chairman Dr Tan Seng Giaw said while the Opposition respected Pandikar’s judgment, they would push on with the meetings.
“Whether or not there are meetings, we (PAC members from the Opposition) will appear to show that we mean business to find out the truth. We really hope the meetings will go on,” Dr Tan said.
Before Tuesday’s Cabinet reshuffle, the PAC had 13 members – eight from Barisan Nasional and five from the Opposition.
Dr Tan said the hearings scheduled for Aug 4-6 could go on with the current five Opposition and four Barisan MPs, who were capable of questioning the 1Malaysia Development Bhd trio summoned by the PAC.
“We just want to know how they spent the money, so you don’t need a balanced line-up of political parties to ask relevant questions.
“The people are concerned about 1MDB, so we are helping them expedite the process instead of waiting for another three months,” said Dr Tan.
This is the first time four PAC members have had to vacate their positions at the same time following their appointments to the government administration.
Yesterday, The Star reported Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee as saying the present structure of PAC members did not reflect the composition of the political parties in Parliament after the departures of the four members, including the chairman.

DPM Cum Home Minister Zahid Hamidi describe the rumour of warrant of arrest for Tan Sri Muhyiddin as Utter Rubbish

          ‘Ex-DPM will not be arrested’

PUTRAJAYA: There is no warrant of arrest for Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, and the authorities have warned irresponsible parties against spreading such rumours.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who described the rumour as utter rubbish, said he did not know why such an allegation was spread, when there was no reason to arrest his predecessor.
“I have received a lot of calls from concerned people asking whether it is true that the former deputy prime minister was to be arrested. I assured them he is not.
“This rumour is totally nonsense. I had called the Attorney-General and the Inspector-General of Police to verify the allegation, and they answered in the negative.
“I then called Tan Sri (Muhyiddin) personally at 2am (yesterday) to assure him and his wife that the police were not coming after them,” he said in an interview with The Star.
Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Home Minister, said action would be taken against those who spread such malicious lies and rumours.
“I will not hesitate to take action against these rumour-mongers. These rumours are malicious,” he said, adding that it could cause anger and unrest among the Umno deputy president’s friends and supporters.
On Wednesday, there was speculation that Muhyiddin would be arrested after he was dropped from the Cabinet.
The rumour then spread like wildfire following a leaked video clip, where Muhyiddin told some people, including Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Mahathir, of a conversation that he allegedly had with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on the 1Malaysia Development Board (1MDB) issue.
On this matter, Dr Ahmad Zahid said what happened was in the privacy of Muhyiddin’s house and a conversation among friends that should not have been spread.
“This is an angry and upset man talking. When one is upset, one will say things.
“I know how it feels because I have gone through that too when I was forced to resign (as Umno Youth chief) and was later held under the Internal Security Act,” he said.
Asked if there was any truth to Muhyiddin’s claim, Dr Ahmad Zahid did not answer but repeated: “An angry man says a lot of things. Whatever it is, we must be respectful towards him.”
Meanwhile, Selangor Umno liaison chairman Datuk Seri Noh Omar said party divisions were free to invite anyone to open their annual general meetings.
He said the party had never interfered in the divisions’ choice of guest of honour.
“I don’t even know who they are inviting,” Noh told reporters after giving away prizes at a special education skills carnival here.
Noh was responding to a question regarding Sungai Besar Umno division’s decision to cancel its invitation to former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to open its AGM on Aug 30.

New Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi: Sarawak Report allegations false

            Attorney-General: Sarawak Report allegations false

            THE STAR

PETALING JAYA: The latest allegations by Clare Rewcastle-Brown in Sarawak Reportare false, says Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali .
"The alleged charge sheets are not in and never reached the Attorney-General's Chambers. Furthermore, the format of the sheets is not correct or written by our Chambers," said the newly appointed Attorney-General in a statement.
‎"The Special Task Force investigation has not been completed. So it is not legally possible for charge sheets to be drafted in advance," he said.
He was referring to Sarawak Report's allegation that Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail was sacked as Attorney-General on Tuesday because he wanted to take action against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
Mohamed Apandi said the alleged charge papers indicate that there was a conspiracy to topple a serving Prime Minister by criminalising him, and that the methods include doctoring and criminal leakage.
"This plot represents a threat to Malaysia's democracy and I will direct for all action possible to be taken to investigate. The full force of the law will be applied without exception to any that are found guilty," he said.
