KUALA LUMPUR: Two despatch riders pleaded not guilty over rioting and having a firearm to hurt a TV station floor manager 12 days ago.

The two are 20-year-olds M. Tinesh and M. Arvendran who claimed trial when the charge was read to them Tuesday.

They were allegedly accused of possessing a weapon at a riot with an intention to hurt Ahmad Hawari Zakaria at Platinum Condominium in Setapak at about 11.30pm on Dec 18.

If convicted, each accused could be sentenced up to five years in jail or fined or both under Section 148 of the Penal Code.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Jazilah Mohd Yushaa applied to the court to deny bail saying that it was a non-bailable offence.

The magistrate was asked to impose an additional bail condition to each accused if she wants to exercise her discretion to grant bail.

Pleading for a lower bail, their lawyer Vincent Chew Zi Xian said both the accused were bachelors who only earned low salaries and that their cousin was in court to bail them.

Magistrate Husna Dzulkifly granted bail at RM5,000 to each accused and issued an additional bail condition not to disturb any of the prosecution witnesses.

Husna set Jan 19 for mention.

The media had reported that the manager was injured after he was attacked by seven men in his apartment unit in Setapak.

The victim's sister had lodged a police report the next day over the assault.
