Man slaughtering cow killed in freak accident on Hari Raya Haji

    BATU PAHAT, Sept 26, 2015:
A 48-year-old surau committee member was killed in a freak Hari Raya Haji incident on Thursday after the cow that the congregation was slaughtering suddenly bucked and caused a machete (parang) to accidentally slash the victim.
The victim, Suharto Meodjib Dimjati, suffered a severe slash injury to his left forearm during the 11am incident at the Taman Cahaya Baru surau compound in Yong Peng near here.
He was rushed by the surau’s committee members to the Yong Peng Health Clinic for treatment, but was then referred to Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital here due to the severity of his injuries.
However, the victim was pronounced dead upon reaching the Emergency and Trauma Unit of the hospital.
The post-mortem result showed that he had died due to loss of blood from the slash wound.Batu Pahat police chief Assistant Commissioner Din Ahmad confirmed the incident.
“Initial investigations revealed that the victim was earlier tasked with securing the sacrificial cow’s head which was the second to be slaughtered out of four by the surau’s imam.
“However, when being slaughtered, the cow suddenly bucked and caused both the victim and the imam to be thrown to the ground,” he said when contacted yesterday.
Din said the machete that the imam held then swung towards the victim’s left forearm causing severe bleeding.
“The parang was sharp and we believe that the slash wound that the victim suffered was deep,” he said, adding that there were no arrests and police have classified the case as a sudden death report.
