ALOR SETAR — An Iranian was sentenced to death after the Alor Setar High Court found him guilty of trafficking in 3.9kg of syabu.
The court found Javad Safikhani, 49, guilty of committing the offence in a taxi at a road block in Jalan Alor Merah here at about 10.30pm on December 12, 2012.
Javad appeared calm when the sentence was read out by Judicial Commissioner Datuk Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab who said the prosecution had proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Zaki said Javad from Teheran was in full control of the two boxes containing the drug when he was arrested. He was supposed to have handed the boxes to a local man.
“He claimed that the boxes were given to him by a friend named Ali while he was in Dubai,” Zaki said.
The accused was represented by counsel B. Murthy while DPP Salim Soib @ Hamid prosecuted.
In mitigation, Murthy told the court that the accused, a former taxi driver, was married and had a wife and two children to support.
“He was jobless and he sold off his taxi to support his family. He was offered a job here by a friend who also handed him the boxes of drug.
“He never thought that his friend would involve him in the drug trade,” he said.
