Cop’s hand severed in attack

KUALA LUMPUR: An off-duty policeman was beaten up and slashed in an early morning mob attack outside an entertainment joint here that left him with a severed right arm.
Friends later rushed the 27-year-old victim to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital where doctors were trying to reattach the limb at press time yesterday.
It is learnt the policeman, whose arm was severed from his elbow, was working part-time at the outlet in Jalan Changkat Bukit Bintang. He was said to have been with some friends outside the joint at the time of the 2.50am incident.
Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Zainol Samah said the attack happened after about 10 men, armed with sticks and parang, arrived in two cars at the place.
Checks by the police found that one of the cars belonged to a 50-year-old man from Taman Setapak Jaya.
The assailants, believed to be between 20 and 30 years old, repeatedly beat up and slashed the policeman before making a quick escape.
“The victim was rushed to the hospital immediately after the assailants left,” said ACP Zainol.
He said the policeman, who is married with one child, underwent a reattachment procedure at the hospital.
“We will get his side of story once he is conscious and ready to talk. We have scrutinised the closed-circuit television camera footage in the area. The suspects have been identified and we are tracking them down,” he said, adding that a parang was seized at the scene.
Asked about the possible motive of the attack, ACP Zainol said it could have been driven by revenge.
“We have interviewed several eyewitnesses, including a parking attendant, and were informed that the victim had been involved in a fight with one of the suspects last week,” he said.
The brawl was purportedly over an accident that occurred near the outlet at about 2.30am on Dec 24.
The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons.
