Cops detain fifth suspect in RM2m security van heist

PETALING JAYA, Oct 30 — Another suspect has been arrested in connection with a RM2 million security van heist on Monday.
Police managed to recover RM1 million following the arrest of the 30-year-old at an undisclosed location in Pahang yesterday.
“The suspect was arrested at 3.30am and was taken to the Serdang police headquarters to assist investigations,” a police source said.
“We believe there are two or three other suspects involved in the heist and the remaining stolen money is probably with them.”
He said a manhunt has been launched to track down the other suspects.
On the day of the incident, police arrested four security guards of Safeguards G4S Sdn Bhd following their inconsistent statement on how they lost RM2 million during the heist.
The four had earlier collected cash from several banks at 9pm in Equine Park in Seri Kembangan. However, instead of heading straight to their office, they stopped by a restaurant for dinner in Lestari Perdana.
The driver of the armoured vehicle claimed he was tired and took a nap while his three colleagues dined.
The driver said two men, one armed with a gun, later appeared out of nowhere and drove the van to a deserted shop-lot area in Taman Equine before escaping with the cash.
“We are checking if the suspect from Pahang had previously worked for the security company.”
A spokesman for Safeguards G4S Sdn Bhd, when contacted, declined to comment on the case saying it was under police investigations.

Premier League ref 'axed for dashing to Ed Sheeran concert'

Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has been temporarily sidelined for breaking protocol in order to attend an Ed Sheeran pop concert, according to a British newspaper report on Wednesday.
The Sun claimed that Clattenburg contravened regulations by driving home alone after refereeing West Bromwich Albion's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday so he could watch British singer Sheeran perform in Newcastle.
The rules of the Premier League's refereeing body, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), state that officials must travel to and from matches together in the interests of their integrity and security.
Clattenburg, 39, is also reported to have broken another rule by speaking to Palace manager Neil Warnock on the phone after the game at The Hawthorns.
Premier League referees are only allowed to speak to managers after games if their assistants are also present.
Britain's Press Association reported that Clattenburg will not officiate in the Premier League this weekend, with Stuart Attwell due to fill in for him in Leicester City's home game against West Brom.

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar’s attempt to divorce her husband Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar Raja Salim has hit a snag. He is refusing to let her go.
Raja Ahmad Sharir, 35, has appealed to the lower Syariah Court here to save his marriage because he still loves his wife and two children.
“If possible, I still want to save my marriage and that is why I do not want to pronounce talak (divorce),” he told reporters after the proceedings held in chambers yesterday.
Nurul Izzah, 34, was accompanied by her counsel Normawaddah Ramli while Raja Ahmad Shahrir arrived with lawyer Azmi Mohd Rais.
Azmi said lower Syariah Court judge Ab Malek Awang advised his client to pronounce talak after he found that there was prolonged disagreement in the marriage or shiqaq.
Raja Ahmad Shahrir, however, disagreed with the suggestion.
The judge then fixed Dec 8 as the next mention date pending the appointment of twohakam or arbitrators.

MH17: Najib vows to bring culprits to justice

DUBAI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak (pic) on Tuesday vowed to bring to justice the perpetrators of the downing of Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH17, but said he feared fighting in Ukraine might block access to the crash site.
In an interview with Reuters in Dubai, Najib also said he hoped to see results over the coming months in the search for missing Malaysian jetliner MH370, bringing closer a solution to the world's greatest aviation mystery. The plane veered off course and disappeared without a trace earlier this year.
Malaysia has been hit by two unprecedented aviation disasters this year - flight MH370's disappearance in March and the downing of flight MH17 over Ukraine in July. Najib told Reuters, Malaysia was determined to continue its search for answers for both.
"We want to pursue this (MH17 investigation) until its logical conclusion, which is to bring to justice the people responsible," he said, speaking on the sidelines of an Islamic finance conference.
"It's going to be a long, drawn-out process. But we need to do this. We need to show that whoever did it must pay the price. Because you cannot bring down a civilian aircraft ... even if you give an excuse that it was unintentional."
MH17 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 298 mostly Dutch passengers aboard when, it is widely suspected, a surface-to-air missile shot it down. Kiev blames separatist rebels in east Ukraine and accuses Moscow of arming them. The rebels and Moscow deny the accusations.
CRITICISM
A report by the Dutch safety board said in September that MH17 crashed after a "large number of high-energy objects" penetrated its fuselage.
Dutch authorities leading the investigation of the crash have come under criticism in the Netherlands from relatives of victims and lawmakers, who say not enough progress has been made in identifying who downed the plane. Officials say cold weather and continuing hostilities are making progress slow.
"Factions are still fighting each other and there are too many splinter groups, making it very risky for us ... we cannot get access to the crash site and that is very frustrating," Najib said. "I don't think what we're doing is adequate enough."
Local emergency services made a start in October, recovering personal belongings from the crash site, after Najib personally negotiated a deal with the rebels to allow access to the bodies of passengers.
He said the bodies of all but one passenger had been secured now.
HOPE FOR MH370 PROBE
The Prime Minister said he expects some results in the search for the missing jetliner MH370 after new technology was deployed to scan the ocean bed.
More than two dozen countries have been involved in the air, sea and underwater search for the missing Boeing 777, but months of searches have failed to turn up any trace, even after the search area was narrowed to the southern Indian Ocean.
The next stage of the search began earlier this month when the GO Phoenix search vessel began sonar sweeps of the ocean bed to locate any trace of wreckage.
"We are using the most sophisticated technology now, on Malaysia's expense," Naib said. "So let us hope in the coming months there will be some success. But if you ask me how long it's going to take ... no one can give you that answer."
Investigators have said what little evidence they have suggests the plane was deliberately diverted from its scheduled route before plunging in the ocean.
Najib also renewed calls for the international aviation community to come up with tracking systems and other technology to avoid another incident like MH370.
"Capability to track planes should be utilised. With today's technology you can track aircraft in real time and that capability should be utilised.
"You cannot allow somebody on board to switch off the communication systems, including the transponder. With the current-day technology and tracking systems, we can improve the capability of the black box in terms of its recording, in terms of its length of time, it gives out signals or pings." – Reuters
