Six nudists jailed one month, fined RM5k each over Penang nude games

BALIK PULAU, Aug 28 — Six men were sentenced today to one month’s jail and RM5,000 fine each for committing obscene acts during the controversial “Penang Nude Sports Game” held in May.
Magistrate Mohd Najib Ismail ordered the six to serve their sentences from today after listening to their individual pleas for a lenient sentence.
The six are Loh Kok Hong, Mu Wei Peng, Justin Ang Ji Keng, Albert Yam Kam Hoong, Lionel Loo Joo Heng and R. Nanda Kumar.
Mohd Najib also sentenced Yam to a further six months’ jail under Section 292 for distribution or possession of pornographic material.
When delivering his sentence, Mohd Najib said the negative reaction of the community towards the issue showed that the society does not accept such acts.
“The Rukun Negara principles, one of which is ‘kesopanan dan kesusilaan’, is the basis for Malaysia to be a harmonious country, which tells us to behave modestly and with morality but the actions you committed are clearly against these principles,” he told the six.
He pointed out that their actions have been criticised by all sections of society.
Loh and Mu, upon hearing the sentence, asked for a stay of execution, saying they needed to settle their affairs first.
But Mohd Najib rejected their application for a stay.
Earlier in court, all six apologised and asked for a lenient sentence.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Edward Chan, however, pressed for a harsher sentence to send a message to others that Malaysia will not tolerate such an offence.
“We need to send a message that we do not accept such a culture in our country especially when the offence could degrade and corrupt young innocent minds,” he said.
The six men, along with four others, were charged with committing obscene acts under Section 294 (a) of Penal Code in public between 3pm and 6pm on May 30 at Pantai Teluk Kampi, Penang National Park.

A video clip showing some 18 people participating in events like body painting and outdoor activities on a secluded beach in the nude at the Penang National Park, went viral recently leading to a huge uproar.
