Duo escape death after LRT beam falls on car

SUBANG JAYA, June 27 — Two people were injured in yet another incident caused by falling construction material from a Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Subang.
Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Azmi Abu Kassim said the latest incident yesterday occurred in Jalan Lapangan Terbang Subang at about 9am when a metal beam, hoisted by a crane, fell on the car.
“A man and a woman in the car suffered multiple injuries,” he said.
The incident caused a van to hit the car from the rear, but the van driver escaped unhurt.
The injured duo were taken to Sime Darby Medical Centre and are reported to be in stable condition.
Azmi said the crane was hoisting the beam at the LRT project site there.
National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the incident clearly showed that safety aspects at the LRT projects sites must be looked into.

“Obviously, someone was negligent and the contractor concerned has to take full responsibility,” he said.
Lee said the LRT project operators constantly claimed that safety was their utmost priority, but the latest incident had proven that assurance alone was not enough.
“Safety measures put in place must be implemented,” he said in a statement.
Lee said with so many construction activities along the LRT project route, the public now travelled in fear of accidents occurring.
“Operators must pay more attention to their contractors and ensure proper supervision at their work sites,” he said.
In March last year, A. Vijayasingam was killed when a 10-tonne piece of construction equipment, hoisted by a crane at an LRT extension in the same area, fell and crushed his car.
The accident happened when Vijayasingam’s car was caught in rush-hour traffic in Jalan Lapangan Terbang Subang.
The development executive died at the scene while another driver, Arifpuddin Mansoruddin, 42, escaped with minor injuries.
