Defending champion Datuk Lee Chong Wei surrendered his Indonesia Open title with a shock defeat to Japan’s Kenichi Tago who won only the second time in 18 encounters. Tago won 21-16, 15-21, 21-16 in a 71 minute battle.
Chong Wei had won the Indonesia Open five times and was expected to reach the final in the USD750,000 Superseries Premier event. However, the Istora Stadium in Jakarta was left stunned when Chong Wei’s poor defence and poor net play gave the more aggressive Tago the edge this time.
Only last week the World No 1 and top seed had beaten Tago in the semi-finals in the Japan Open in Tokyo where he went to retain his title for his fifth Japan Open.
Tago will now meet Denmark’s Jan O Jorgensen in the final. The Dane sent second seed and World No 2 Chen Long out of the tournament with a 21-19, 21-18 win for his first victory over the Chinese ace.
Tago took the first set with a commanding performance after leading 11-3 but Chong Wei came back strongly to win the second at 21-15 to force a rubber. However, the Japanese took another aggressive approach with some powerful smashes to deal victory with a 21-16 win.
