In a bit of surprising news on the relationship front, Rory McIlroy has called off his engagement and ended his relationship with tennis star and girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki.

McIlroy issued a statement saying that he has called off the engagement after already sending out wedding invites to guests, saying the invitations actually triggered something internally that made him realize he isn't ready for marriage.
“The problem is mine,” he said in a statement sent out by his management firm. “The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.”
“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people,” he added. “I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we have had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”

McIlroy and Wozniacki got engaged on New Year's Eve, and while rumors have swirled at times about the young couple, anytime the two were seen in public it looked like they were having fun together.
Earlier this year at the Masters, Wozniacki caddied for McIlroy at the Par-3 Contest for the second straight year, sporting some very, very pink hair at one of the most reserved golf courses in the world.
While this stuff is public news, and definitely a buzzy type of issue, if you actually think about these two as people and not famous athletes, it's actually pretty sad. From accounts of journalists actually at the BMW PGA Championship in England, Rory looked distraught during his press conference, and while it might have been the right thing to do, we never root for anything like this to fail.
So while this seems to be the end of Rorzniacki, or whatever they were called, we will still get to see McIlroy this week at one of the biggest stops on the European Tour, and while Caroline might be taking the news equally as tough, the French Open kicks off in just four days, so at least she will have something to keep her mind off this, as long as she can keep advancing.
