Court sentences 'serial Casanova' to 3 years' jail, caning, for cheating woman of RM2,000

GEORGE TOWN: A computer technician, labelled a 'serial casanova', was sentenced to three years jail and a stroke of the cane by the Magistrates Court here Tuesday for cheating a woman two years ago.
Magistrate L. Umma Devi sentenced accused K. Prabaharan, 45, after he changed his plea to guilty.
He was charged with deceiving A. Vanija, 31, on Oct 8, 2012 by offering to secure a school canteen tender and inducing her to pay him RM2,000.
According to the facts of the case, Prabaharan claimed to have known the school's principal, 
He promised to return the money if the tender was not successful, but failed to do so.
He was charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, caning and a fine upon conviction.
The prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutor Azura Zulkiflee, while lawyer Ravi Chandran appeared for the accused.
Prabaharan also pleaded guilty to a further two charges of cheating in separate Magistrates Courts.
The first count involved deceiving B. Vikneswary, 29, of RM16,000 as repayment for a National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan on Dec 6, 2012.
Ravi Chandran applied for a postponement of judgement to allow the defence to prepare their appeal.
Magistrate Sri Pracha Nanthini Balabedha set April 25 for the judgement.
On the second count, Prabaharan was charged with cheating senior citizen T. Suppamal, 68, of RM60,000 worth of gold jewellery, purportedly to have it cleaned.
He committed the offence at a house in Taman Hamna Lorong Helang 1, Sungai Dua, Gelugor here on Nov 7 2012.
Magistrate Diannee Ningrad Nor Azahar fixed May 19 for re-mention. - Bernama
