Malaysian King Concerned With Citizens Who Challenge The Constitution, Their Action Could Undermine Peace & Harmony

Agong concerned with citizens who challenged the constitution

SINTOK: The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah today said he is concerned with the attitude of some quarters in challenging the laws in the country, including the Federal Constitution.
He said their actions could undermine the peace and harmony enjoyed by the people in the country.

Although Islam is the official religion of the federation, he saidthe Federal Constitution also provides freedom for non-Muslims to practice their respective religious faiths.

"As head of the country, I wish to bring to attention the role, responsibility and obligation of all quarters to safeguard the country's peace and harmony.

"The people should always respect and uphold the law," he said when opening Universiti Utara Malaysia's (UUM) 26th convocation here today.

He said it was the responsibility of all Malaysians to uphold the country's laws because that made them into responsible citizens.

"We may not be able to enjoy all the freedom provided in the constitution if we are not law abiding citizens," he added.

Sultan Abdul Halim, who is UUM Chancellor, said the university was established to meet one of the 13 basic rights of Malaysians as provided in the constitution, the right to higher education.

A total of 7,445 UUM graduates will receive their scrolls at this year's convocation, to be held until Dec 3.

They included 420 foreign students from 22 countries.

Also present at the ceremony were Kedah Council of Regency chairman Tan Sri Tunku Annuar Sultan Badlishah and Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir.      -- BERNAMA
